


Tomo Yamada is an interdisciplinary artist focusing in performance art and choreography. Born in Japan and educated in the United States, she has spent most of her life traveling between North America and Japan, negotiating distinct cultural identities. Her practice is influenced by her ongoing research into identity politics and her self-reflexive interrogation of transnational cultural differences. She recently completed her Master of Fine Arts degree at Simon Fraser University’s School for the Contemporary Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts. Tomo has been presenting works internationally such as Dance Cafe, International Dance Day at the Dance Centre, Open Stage, Dancing on the Edge Festival, Vines Art Festival and REVERBdance Festival. Her works include HUG (2023), UCHI (2023), Friday Dinner (2020), Stuck in 2020 (2020), yane ura (2019), Femme Façade (2014), and Emergency! (2013), which have been performed and recreated in Japan, Canada and the United States. Aside from dance, Tomo has been involved in numerous Theatre and Musical Theatre productions including Sunakabe no Heya (Piccolo Theatre, Japan) and Les Miserables (Hankyu Hall, Japan). She recently started venturing into the film/TV industry, working on the set of Shogun (FX/Hulu, 2024) as a translator and as a recurring background character.
